World’s Smallest Owl
The World Records Authority is proud to recognise the Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi) as the World’s Smallest Owl. This tiny avian marvel, native to the south-western United States and Mexico, measures just 12β14 cm (4.75β5.5 in) in length and weighs less than 50 g (1.75 oz) β roughly the weight of a AA battery β making it not only the world’s smallest owl but one of the lightest birds of prey on the planet.
Despite its diminutive stature, the Elf Owl is a highly effective predator. Found predominantly in desert scrub, riparian woodlands, and saguaro cacti habitats, it hunts insects, scorpions, and small invertebrates with remarkable efficiency. The species is also known for its striking adaptability, nesting in old woodpecker cavities within cacti and cliff faces across its range.
This official WRA certification acknowledges the Elf Owl’s standing as one of nature’s most astonishing examples of compact avian design β a world record holder that continues to captivate ornithologists and wildlife enthusiasts across the globe.
