Back to Records
The World Records Authority officially recognises the Mid-Oceanic Ridge as the Longest Mountain Range on Earth — spanning an incredible 80,000 kilometres (approx. 50,000 miles).
This continuous chain of seafloor volcanoes winds around the globe like the seams of a baseball. While mostly hidden beneath 3,000–5,000 metres of water, its geological significance is unrivalled — serving as the primary engine for the creation of the Earth’s crust. From the Mid-Atlantic to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, this tectonic marvel stands as a testament to the grand scale of our planet’s natural wonders.
The children presented this world-changing letter to the Lake District’s World Heritage bid team at Brockhole, supporting their successful quest for UNESCO World Heritage status. The World Records Authority is proud to certify this extraordinary act of community creativity and passion.
