What began as an absent-minded sketch in 2009 evolved over fourteen extraordinary years into the Largest Collaborative Embroidery Project on Earth โ€” a breathtaking masterpiece that the World Records Authority is honoured to officially certify as a world record for the Most Collaborative Embroidery Project (Unique Artists).

The project, led by visionary artist and creator Kirstie Macleod, brought together 380 artists from 61 nations โ€” including 50 separate embroidery communities from across the globe โ€” each contributing their unique cultural artistry to a single, extraordinary garment: The Red Dress. An intricate tapestry of global creativity, carefully spun over 14 years, the dress stands as one of the most ambitious and emotionally resonant art installations ever conceived.

“A single thread passed through 61 nations, 380 hands, and 14 years โ€” becoming something the world had never seen before.”

The numbers behind this record are staggering. A total estimated stitch count of between 1 and 1.5 billion individual stitches โ€” each placed by a unique human hand, each carrying a story, a culture, a moment in time. WRA spent years meticulously tracking the progress of this monumental artwork, monument 14lb (6.8kg) in total, to ensure the dedication of every hand that contributed a stitch was formally recognised.

The Red Dress is more than a garment. It is a testament to what humanity can create when borders dissolve and creativity becomes the common language. Communities from across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and beyond each left their mark โ€” their patterns, their traditions, their identity โ€” woven into the fabric of something shared and universal.

The World Records Authority celebrates this achievement as one of the most remarkable acts of collaborative artistry in human history. Celebrate the achievement. Witness the art.
