Most Expensive Man-Made Object — International Space Station (ISS)
World Records Authority is proud to officially announce the recognition of one of humanity’s greatest collective achievements — the International Space Station (ISS) has been formally certified as the Most Expensive Man-Made Object ever created, with a final cost estimated at over $100 Billion (£66.7 Billion). This orbital outpost represents an unparalleled investment in science, technology, and global unity.
A symbol of international cooperation between the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada, the ISS has orbited Earth at approximately 400 kilometres altitude since its first module was launched in 1998. What began as a bold vision for a permanent human presence in space has grown into a continuously inhabited laboratory that has hosted hundreds of astronauts from dozens of nations.
The station stretches over 109 metres from end to end — wider than a football field — and comprises 16 pressurised modules. It has served as the platform for thousands of scientific experiments in biology, physics, astronomy, and materials science, many of which would be impossible to conduct under Earth’s gravity. Its contributions to human knowledge are incalculable.
World Records Authority recognises the International Space Station not only as the most expensive man-made object ever constructed, but as the most extraordinary expression of human ambition, engineering marvel, and international cooperation in history.
