🌿 The Maze at Hampton Court Palace 📍 Hampton Court Palace, UK 📅 Est. 1690 👑 Commissioned by William III & Mary II 🌳 Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) Yew Style

At the grand grounds of Hampton Court Palace on the banks of the Thames, a garden feature has stood for over 330 years — puzzling, delighting, and captivating visitors from around the globe. The Maze at Hampton Court Palace, established in 1690, has been officially recognised by the World Records Authority as the Oldest Surviving Hedge Maze in the world — an enduring testament to regal horticultural design.

Commissioned by King William III and Queen Mary II, the maze was originally designed by the legendary royal gardeners George London and Henry Wise, whose genius shaped some of the most celebrated landscapes in English history. Planted in the distinctive Carpinus betulus (hornbeam) yew style, the maze unfolds across a trapezoidal footprint of interlocking hedgerow paths designed to challenge, disorient, and enchant in equal measure.

“For over 330 years, this living masterpiece has offered visitors from across the globe a challenging and delightful puzzle — a marvel of meticulously maintained historic landscapes.”

Over more than three centuries, the Hampton Court Maze has welcomed millions of visitors, surviving the passage of kings and queens, wars and weathering, while its hornbeam hedges have continued to grow and be tenderly maintained by dedicated horticultural teams. It remains a living, breathing example of garden artistry that has never stopped serving its original purpose.

The World Records Authority honours Hampton Court Palace for preserving this incredible piece of world heritage — a garden landmark that connects visitors today to the living legacy of a royal commission made more than 330 years ago. Verified and validated by the official authority.
