📍 Plaza de Armas, Arequipa, Peru📅 16 September 2018🏷 Largest Folk Dance💃 4,704 Dancers (2,352 pairs)

On 16 September 2018, the historic Plaza de Armas in Arequipa, Peru — one of Latin America’s most magnificent colonial squares — was transformed into the world’s largest stage for traditional Peruvian folk dance. Under the organisation of the Municipalidad Provincial de Arequipa, an astonishing 2,352 pairs — 4,704 total dancers — gathered to perform the Pampeña Arequipeña, the beloved traditional folk dance of the Arequipa region, setting a new world record for the largest Peruvian folk dance ever performed.

The Pampeña Arequipeña is one of Peru’s most treasured cultural expressions — a vibrant, joyful dance characterised by colourful traditional costumes, energetic footwork, and the exuberant spirit of the Andean people. Seeing 4,704 dancers fill the Plaza de Armas in perfect synchrony, their traditional skirts spinning and straw hats gleaming in the Arequipa sun, was a breathtaking display of cultural pride, community unity, and the enduring vitality of Peru’s folk heritage.

“4,704 dancers, one magnificent square, and a tradition that has endured for generations — Arequipa’s record is a love letter to Peru written in movement and music.”

World Records Authority proudly recognises the Municipalidad Provincial de Arequipa and all 4,704 participants for this magnificent achievement. This record is a testament to the extraordinary dedication of the Arequipa community to preserving and celebrating their cultural heritage — and a benchmark of precision, passion, and pride that will inspire folk dancers and cultural communities around the world for years to come.
