Sultan Kösen – World’s Tallest Living Man
Certificate of Record — World’s Tallest Living Man
At 8 feet 2.8 inches (251 cm) tall, Sultan Kösen of Türkiye stands in a category entirely his own — the world’s tallest living man, a Guinness World Records ICON whose extraordinary stature has made him one of the most recognised figures on the planet. His journey, however, is far more than a story of height. It is a story of survival, resilience, and the quiet courage it takes to live in a body the world was not designed to accommodate.
Sultan’s remarkable height is the result of a rare pituitary tumour that triggered a condition of gigantism, causing him to grow well beyond normal limits. He first entered the record books at 8 ft 1 in (246.5 cm), and continued to grow, eventually reaching his current height of 8 ft 2.8 in (251 cm). That same tumour that gave him his record-breaking stature has also placed him in ongoing need of life-saving medical intervention — a reality that shadows each chapter of his life with both wonder and gravity.
In 2024, Sultan’s story was brought to a global audience through a Channel 4 documentary in the UK titled The World’s Tallest Man — The Next Chapter, produced and directed by Stuart Clarke. The film followed Sultan from his home in Türkiye to London, where he faced a series of critical medical tests to assess the cumulative toll of decades of extraordinary growth — the strain on his frame, the chronic pain in his enormous feet, and the threat his condition continues to pose to his mobility and long-term health.
Sultan Kösen’s record is not simply a measurement. It is a testament to a life lived with extraordinary grace under extraordinary circumstances — and a reminder that behind every world record is a human being with a story worth knowing.
